Hand Carved Wooden Staffs and Canes

The Method

All carvings are performed with local cottonwood saplings I select by hand and harvest from the property I live on here in north central Florida. Carvings are all done with basic hand tools and knives while the saplings are green, then cured and prepared for painting or natural wood finishing. Some staffs have "checking" cracks from the curing process, which I believe adds to the appeal of custom, hand-carved staffs and canes. Each subject is different, and no two staffs are exactly the same. Each is a one-of-a-kind original hand-carved by myself with its own unique features and impressions. I do all my work at home in my garden when time permits and I continue learning each time I try a new project. Most of all the carvings are done with a simple carving knife and other small carving tools. Final preparations may include light sanding before acrylic painting and / or clear finish is applied.

The Artist's Thoughts and Vision

I don't always know where a carving may progress. Sometimes, I have an idea for the finished staff, sometimes not, sometimes the wood itself dictates the subject, and final appearance. I am a hands-on, learn-as-you-go, perfectionist, who is far from perfect, if that makes any sense, who desires to create images in wood that are useful as well as pleasing to the eye, and somewhat different than the average walking staff or walking cane. I hope any purchase of my staffs or canes will bring a sense of workmanship which has been lost over the years to mass production or "cookie cutter" products that are all identical and reproduced endlessly. I would hope my staffs offer a feeling of personality and originality that is unique to each and every staff and cane I carve. If my staffs or canes find their way to you, be assured when my signature is on the piece, I hand-carved it individually, from start to finish, with my two hands to the best of my ability, in hopes of bringing satisfaction to anyone who desires a unique walking staff or cane, the old fashioned way, hand made.
